The British University in Dubai (BUiD), was established in 2004 and is the Middle East region's first, research based, postgraduate university. BUiD offers a unique opportunity for higher education. As one of the region's most innovative institutions, BUiD sets the standards for study and research that will significantly contribute to the technological innovation and growth of the Arab world and beyond.

The Best of British Education in Dubai:

BUiD was established to facilitate access to world class education, training and research in the Middle East. At BUiD's recent first anniversary celebrations HE, Richard Makepeace, the British Ambassador to the UAE commented that BUiD was "one of the most exciting developments in UAE/UK relations we have seen for many years".

Working in partnership with leading UK universities BUiD offers cutting edge education and research in key disciplines. BUiD aspires to the highest, internationally recognized British standards and provisions as reflected in its partnerships with the University of Edinburgh, the University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, Cardiff University and the Cass Business School of City University, London

All BUiD Masters programmes have accreditation eligibility from UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

BUiD is located in Knowledge Village, Dubai.

BUiD's Founders and Contributers:
BUiD was established as a 'not for profit' university. The Founders of the University are Al Maktoum Foundation, Dubai Development and Investment Authority, the National Bank of Dubai, the British Business Group, and Rolls Royce.

BUiD has also received strong backing from local and international organisations who have shown their support for BUiD at several levels including funding and scholarships. These include the Emirates Group, DUCAB, Dubai Duty Free, DUGAS, Atkins, Hyder Consulting, and the Emirates Foundation.

To join a Masters programmes at BUiD you must normally have a Bachelors degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be appropriately qualified in English language. In certain circumstances, eg where candidates have substantial relevant work experience or additional professional qualifications, then a case for exceptional entry may be made. Tuition Fees

The fee for Masters programmes in 2006/07 is AED 80,000 for the entire programme, whether studied on a full time (1 year) or part time (2 year) basis. The registered student is responsible for payment of the fee.

The fee may be paid in full before the start of the programme, or by installments. If payment is made by installments, full-time students may pay in 3 or 13 installments and part time students may pay in 3 or 25 installments, in accordance with the following schedule:

a. 3 installments - full-time AED
To reserve a place 8000
Start of semester 1 36000
Start of semester 2 36000
Total 80000
b. 3 installments - part-time AED
To reserve a place 8000
At the start of year 1 36000
At the start of year 2 36000
Total 80000
c. 13 installments - full-time

d. 25 installments - part time

Students receiving scholarships will have their payments reduced proportionately.

Students opting to pay by installments must deposit post-dated cheques with the University prior to the programme. Identity cards will not be issued, nor registration completed, until payments and post dated cheques (where applicable) are received. Students whose fees are paid by their employers or another person are required to complete a Sponsorship form which must be signed and stamped by their Sponsor. BUiD will then invoice the Sponsor for the full fee, which may be paid in one or three installments.

Accomodation & Living Expenses:

If you are coming to live in Dubai from another Emirate or from another country you will need to ensure that you have sufficient funds to meet your living costs while you are here.

The amount of money you will need will, to some extent, depend upon your own lifestyle. However, in order to obtain a student visa you will need to demonstrate that you have the equivalent of AED 30,000 at your disposal to support yourself in Dubai.

Additional Information:

BUiD holds occasional Open Lectures which are offered free to members of the public. The lectures are given by BUiD academic staff and guest lecturers from our partner universities. The Lectures are generally related to disciplines offered at BUiD and are on topics of particular relevance to the Arab world. They provide an opportunity for professionals working in the relevant field and others who have a general interest in the discipline or topic to keep up to date with latest developments and research.

The British education system

British schools have a mixed reputation: while the quality of state education varies widely, universities and other higher education institutions have an excellent international reputation and educate tens of thousands of foreign students a year from all corners of the globe.

Full-time education is compulsory in the UK for all children between the ages of 5 (4 in Northern Ireland) and 16, including the children of foreign nationals permanently or temporarily resident in the UK for a year or longer. No fees are payable in state schools, which are attended by over 90 per cent of pupils.

The rest attend one of the 3200 private fee-paying schools, which include American, international and foreign schools. Some 80 per cent of pupils stay on at school after the age of 16 or go on to higher education. However, for those children entering secondary education in September 2007, the new compulsory age for schooling will mean they have to either be in school or on an approved training scheme until they are 18. From 2013, full-time paid employment will be against the law for under-18’s.

Most state schools (primary and secondary) are co-educational (mixed) day schools, with the exception of a few secondary schools that accept boarders. Private schools include day and boarding schools and are mostly single-sex, although an increasing number of junior and some senior schools are co-educational. Admission to a state school for foreign children is dependent on the type and duration of the residence permit granted to their parents. Your choice of state and private schools varies considerably depending on where you live.
